Broward County’s Adults with Disabilities Program
Giving People with Disabilities a Place and a Voice
When you look back at how people with disabilities were treated years ago, they were given little opportunity to make choices and mostly assumed a passive role at home and in their communities. Students attending the Adults with Disabilities program “find their voices” in a safe place that brings out their talents and skills. Here are some successful outcomes of some of our students:
-D.M., a student with an intellectual disability, obtained his first part-time position in the stock room at Marshalls. This was the first time he was employed in his life. Originally shy, introverted and anxious, D.M. is able to perform his job responsibilities without the help of his job coach. D.M. gained independence and self-confidence. The store is very happy with D.M.’s performance.
-T.J., a student with traumatic brain injury, asked his music instructor at Whispering Pines for a solo part in this year’s spring musical for the first time. In the past, he had always chosen not to participate in any of the musical activities at school. Following the performance and a standing ovation, T.J. gained a more positive outlook and greater self-esteem from attempting something new.
The Adults with Disabilities Program is located at Wingate Oaks and Whispering Pines, and follows the Broward County School calendar. There is no summer program. Students who meet eligibility criteria may enroll any time during the school year, on a space available basis.
